Women’s Health: Menopause Matters

Welcome to our menopause information page. Here you will find reliable, up-to-date guidance on menopause, including common symptoms, treatment options, lifestyle advice, and sources of support. Whether you are approaching menopause, currently experiencing symptoms, or looking for information to support a family member or friend, this page provides helpful resources to answer your questions and guide you to further information. We have also included links to trusted organisations to help you make informed decisions about your health and wellbeing during this stage of life.

For many women, perimenopause and menopause can lead to a range of physical symptoms, which are unpredictable and may last for an uncertain amount of time. Hormonal changes, the physical symptoms and their unpredictability may contribute to emotional distress during perimenopause and menopause. It is therefore important to learn ways to look after your emotional wellbeing whilst going through this stage of life. Cognitive behavioural techniques and breathing exercises can help you navigate the emotional difficulties and physical symptoms you might experience.

Menopause at work / Menopause and discrimination

Employers should make sure they have steps, procedures, and support in place to help workers affected by menopause.

Having regular conversations with workers and listening to their concerns might help resolve issues early on before any potential legal action is taken.

Employers should make sure they know how menopause relates to the law, including the:

  • Equality Act 2010, which protects workers against discrimination
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which says an employer must, where reasonably practical, ensure everyone's health, safety and welfare at work
  • Employment Rights Act 2025, which has introduced action plans for menopause and gender pay gaps.

Menopause is not a specific protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. But if an employee or worker is put at a disadvantage and treated less favourably because of their menopause symptoms, this could be discrimination if related to a protected characteristic, for example:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • sex
